Task 17: Creating a Page on Wikispaces

Because we will be using Wikispaces on a regular basis in our classroom, each of you needs to learn how to contribute to the site by making pages, adding links, uploading files, and inserting pictures!

However, before we delve into using technology on a regular basis, we need to understand how to appropriately and professionally use these tools.

For this week's Techy Tuesday, you will be creating your very own Student Page on our class wiki that will focus on Acceptable Use of Technology.

On your page, please include the following items:

1. Five Acceptable Use rules you think should be included in our class policy
2. A brief explanation of each rule
3. Links to at least TWO websites where you found your information about these rules
4. An image that goes with each rule (a total of five images)
5. A resources we can use to better understand how to use appropriately use computers and the Internet
(A video, game, website, etc.)

Mr. Poole and I will choose the top ten Acceptable Use rules to create our own class policy!

Task 16: How To Become a Member of a Wiki on Wikispaces

This year, we will be using Wikispaces as our homebase for all of the technology stuff we will be doing in class! In order to contribute to our site, you will need to become a member of our class wiki.

Please go to our class website: http://msspiezio11.wikispaces.com

And follow the directions in the video below!

BE SURE your user name has an identifier in it! Your first name, last name, initials MUST BE IN YOUR USER NAME!

Become a member by Friday to earn your points for this week!

Task 15: Creating a GMail Account

Email is quickly becoming the most common form of communication used in the workplace, and is becoming the most common form of communication in our classroom!

Because we will be using the Google Applications in class, it is essential for each of you to have a GMail account.

NOTE: Your GMail account is to be used for school purposes only! The address itself should reflect this! Make a professional email address, one that represents you as a young adult!

This week, you will be creating your own GMail account. To earn points for this Techy Tuesday task, you must send me an email from your new account by FRIDAY!

Your subject should be.... "Your Name" Says Hi!

Inside the email, write me a short note about your experience using technology. Have you used it in class before? At home? For fun? What do you typically do on the computer?

Don't forget! It's due by Friday!

Enjoy your Techy Tuesday!

Helpers!

Students,

We've been working so much with technology lately, and we haven't been able to post all of the neat stuff we're doing in our classrooms!

Each of you has been assigned a different technology skill we've reviewed this year! Create your screencast using Screenr. You can sign in with your Google Account and begin recording! Once your screencast is complete, make sure you publish your video and email me the embed code with the title of your skill!

You videos will be posted on Techy Tuesday as they come up!

Task 13: Embedding a website or blog into your portfolio

Well students,

Now that you are all officially "Techies," it is time to teach you how to use a bit of "HTML." "HTML" is a language that the computer understands and obeys! Today we are going to write an easy bit of HTML in order to embed our blogs or websites into our portfolio.

Please follow the steps below and use the HTML code exactly in order for the computer to understand :)

Step One:
Open up your google portfolio/site you are using to keep all of your work.

Step Two:
Once you have opened the portfolio, click on the button that says "Create New Page" (probably has a green plus sign next to it).

Step Three:
Name the page "Blog" or something similar

Step Four:
Once on this "new page" click on the "HTML" button.
When the screen pops up you will see "<br>"... LEAVE IT ALONE :)

Step Five:
Type the following HTML code directly underneath it:
(Type your blog URL where it says "your blog URL")

<iframe src=http://yourblogURL/></iframe>

Hit "update" and then click "SAVE"

Step Six:
You can play around with the size of the blog by doing the following:

- Click on "Edit Page"
- Double click the top of the gadget
- Click on properties

I like to the the width at around 750 - 800 and the height at about 500

Step Seven:
To get the page to show up in the "sidebar navigation" you may have to follow these steps:

- Click on "Edit sidebar"
- Once on the edit page click on the "edit" button under the "navigation" section
- Click "Add Page"
- Choose the page you would like to add to the sidebar
- Click "OK" and then "Save Changes" and your done!

YOUR TASK:

1. Insert your Blog or website into your portfolio!
2. Share your portfolio with your teacher if you haven't already

Check out the video below to watch these steps in action!
